At the beginning of September, the Tokio Hotel returned home after a gruelling American tour. Next step: recording the successor to "Zimmer 483". Just before they go into the studio, we’ve chatted a few minutes with them to take stock of these recent months. Bill and Tom also talk about their next album ...

So guys, glad to be back home after your American journey?

Bill:Yes, we are very happy to be back home and with our families ... We really loved to spend all this time in the United States, but we really began to have difficulties with the country. A month abroad is a long time ...
Tom:As for me, I admit that it really wouldn’t have bothered me to stay a little longer. I love the US. First, in terms of clothes, it’s really great there. I brought a ton of clothes and several pairs of sneakers that you can’t find in Europe. And then, I feel really comfortable in big cities like New York and Los Angeles. I really enjoyed it there ...

Your goal was to break through in the United States. Do you have the feeling that you have attained it?

Tom:Frankly, none of us four expected that there’d be so many fans at our concerts. It has always been sold out and the public was as crazy over there as in Europe. I think, we have fulfilled our contract. The mission is accomplished in a way (laughter).
Georg:We all feel to have managed to achieve something great. I don’t think that before us a German band has met such hype in the USA.

Yet, one can slow a bit down the enthusiasm of your American success: during your promo there, you have sold only 100,000 albums, while the goal was to reach 500,000...

Bill:You're right, despite our efforts, "Scream" has not really taken off in the U.S. charts. Frankly, I don’t know what the reason is. We have done our best to make our music known to as many people, but the U.S. market is very difficult to access for foreign artists. However, without wanting to sing our own praises, selling 100,000 albums is still enormous for a German band. We are not disappointed by this result.
Tom:What we enjoyed the most was to receive an MTV Video Music Awards for Best New Artist. We didn’t expect that at all since we were in competition with Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry or Taylor Swift, who are far more popular than us over there. To receive this award was a real shock. To date, it may be the best reward we have received for our career. In addition, I must say that I really enjoyed seeing the confused puss of Miley Cyrus when the winners, in other words us, have been announced ... (laughter)
You don’t seem to have taken her to your heart...

Tom:On the one hand, I am not a fan of what she does, plus, she doesn’t have the physical criteria that I look for in a girl. So, everything is said. (laughter)
Bill: Tom talks bullshit, as usual! He is an uptight fan of "Hannah Montana", I’ve have already caught him watching some episodes secretly. (laughter)
Tom:We will settle that tonight. Secretly ...

How many times have you been asked where did the band name come from when you were in the US?

Bill:(laughter) I don’t know. 250 times, the number of interviews we gave there ... I thought, we had returned three years back. The total horror.
Tom: "How did you come to music" is also a question that has often been asked ... Of course, it’s boring having to repeat the same thing for the thousandth time. But it makes humble, it reminds us that not everyone is supposed to know us. It does us good to regain that feeling to start from scratch or almost... We’ve got down a bit from our little cloud.
Georg:Yeah, but I admit that it's annoying, though. I thought that American journalists would have a little better swot their subject before meeting us. Alas, no ...

If you have to treasure a noteworthy event of this trip, which would it be?

Bill:For me, it would probably be one of the signing sessions that we organized in a record store. It's always great to be able to meet our fans and listen to the stories they tell. These meetings have inspired me a lot for our next album ...

Tom:As for me, I especially remember the times when two fans managed to get into my hotel room while I was getting ready to go to bed. I have absolutely no idea how they managed to find us ... However, I must say it was a rather pleasant surprise. But I can not tell you the sequel, I let that to your imagination ... (laughter)

Let's talk about serious things now, the preparation of your third album. What is its state of affairs exactly?

Tom:We are just about to go into the studio. Needless to say we are 100% focused on this new project. That is why you will certainly not hear much about us in the coming months ...
Bill:Yes, we are aware that this is one of the most important steps in our career. The pressure is enormous, but we try not to think about it too much. Our goal is to ensure that this album is simply the best we have recorded.

What can we expect sound-wise?

Tom: The idea is to make songs that surprise our fans and show a facet of us they probably don’t know. We don’t want to rest on our achievements and record a second "Zimmer 483". The idea is to take some more risks, while maintaining our identity ..
Bill:We also want our lyrics to be more personal. That is certainly the effort that I make. Everything I’ve experienced in the past year greatly inspired me and I filled notebooks full of lyrics ...

If this third album was going worse than the previous two, would that make you worry about the continuation of your career?
Bill: I know that it would please some people if we fail with our next album. The success has not only attracted sympathies for us, far from it... Now, we don’t rack our brains over it. As I said, we are going to make the best possible album. And if it is less well received than "Schrei" or "Zimmer 483", frankly, it wouldn’t be the end of the world ...
Tom: Actually, no band can stay on top forever, we are aware of that. For now, our career is like a fairy tale, it is almost too good to be true. We’ll surely experience throwbacks. But whatever happens, we are so passionate about music that we’ll never stop doing it, that’s for sure.

HISTORIAS DEL BACKSTAGE!
ZIMMER 483 TOUR EUROPEO

TOM: Era el primer concierto de nuestro album "zimmer 483", entonces estabamos muy nerviosos. Una vez fui al escenario y se me olvido todo. Estaba tan nervioso esa noche!

GEORG: No hubo tambien monton de lio...incluso antes del show?

TOM: Si, pero el show fue bien!

GEORG: la elevadora no funciono y el equipo no podia montar el escenario!

UNA NOCHE EN "LA MANSION ENCANTADA"...
TOM: Tendrias que haber estado en el castillo con nosotros cuando tocamos en el festival en Francia con Marilyn Manson. No habia ni una television en el castillo y de noche era bastante tetrico. Y recuerdo una cosa!
Realmente asustamos a (...) una noche hasta la muerte! Estaba en un edificio separado, ella sola...lejos de todos.
Una noche fuimos a su habitacion y golpeamos a su puerta como locos, lo que la aterrorizo-no podia dormirse...durante el resto de la noche y tampoco descubrio nunca que fuimos nosotros!

BILL Y TOM, LA GUERRA DE LOS ROSES

BILL: Tom, en "Rette mich" te comiste una nota el ultimo concierto -eso son tres gigs en un compas que no estabas perfecto. Estoy seguro que tampoco lo haras sin faltas hoy ;-)

GEORG: Es una maldad decir eso justo antes del show!

BILL: Tom la ha cagado muchas veces en el pasado. Cuando yo me equivoca UNA VEZ, como cambiando el orden de las palabras,los otros me molestan siempre... y Tom le da por parar de tocar durante unas cuantas estrofas solo porque no sabe como volver a la cancion.

TOM: Unas cuantas estrofas? No exageres!

BILL: ... comentiendo equivocaciones en las tres ultimas estrofas-eso es triste ;-)

TOM: El problema es que "Rette mich" ya suena realmente mal cuando te saltas una sola nota de una estrofa minuscula.

Bill: En serio Tom, despues de cinco años deberias ser capaz de tocar cada nota perfectamente!

TOM: Oh, es genial que justo toque "Rette mich" -Yo nunca he hecho eso durante un ensayo.

BILL: Nunca? Bueno, pues definitivamente lo habras hecho!
UNA BAÑERA EN EL TOURBUS!!

BILL: Si tubiera una bañera aqui...una que fluyera naturalmente.

TOM: Eso es guay pero imposible de tener en un tourbus.

BILL: Entonces el agua no se saldria cuando el bus girara bruscamente.

TH Staff... porque fluiria igualmente ;-)

TOM: El bus se tiene que parar ciuando tomo un baño.

BILL: Imagina estar en la bañera, el bus gira bruscamente y la fuerza te lanza fuera de la bañera y toda el agua tambien... asi que la bañera se convierte en una ducha...

TOM: ...Y entonces eres lanzado contra la ventana complemtamente desnudos.

BILL: Y la luz encima encendida y olvidaste poner algo en la ventana.

TOM: Esto me recuerda a los Simpsons... cuando un tio pequeño se estampa desnudo contra la ventana de la camioneta. Y se queda pegado en la ventana al lado de X***X (el conductor) y toda la gente fuera mirando y tomando fotografias!

BILL: Vamos- es momento del show!

TOM: Si, vamos chicos -momento de concentrarse ;-)

LA IMPORTANCIA DE INTERNET
Bill: Creemos que es importante para cualquier banda formar parte de Internet, y para nosotros siempre ha ido muy muy importante todo ese tema de estar en Internet, porque asi funciona, primero eran solo 10 paginas, y luego estabamos en los paises y sabemos que internet es muy importante para llegar aqui, en nuestro segundo show en Los Angeles y estamos muy nerviosos y muy excitados.

QUE ESPERAIS DE LA ACTUACION DE EStA NOCHE
Tom: Se puede esperar a un buen guitarrista...
Georg: Y un sonido asombroso, increible...
Tom: vamos ver...
Bill: yo creo que un show de rock en directo mas pequeño porque es un local cerrado, es diferente de otros que hemos hecho, 2 dvd´s de directos de gira por Europa eran grandes estadios con 12mil o 13000 personas asi que e diferente esta noche tenemos un escenario pequeño, pero creo que tambien es guay tocar en un pequeño club, percibes laatmosfera del publico y creo que podemos esperar un buen show
Tom: un buen show, un show alto
Georg: Si

PEQUEÑOS O GRANDES RECINTOS
Tom: Empezamos tocando en pequeños clubs, creo que con 4 o 5 personas como audiencia ace 3 años, pero nos gustan las dos cosas, en los 3 tour europeos tocabamos en grandes estadios ante 17000 personas, y llevas tu propia produccion, tu propio escenario, tu equipo, equipo de directo, esta muy bien pero tambien ns gustan los locales pequeños.
Bill: A mi me gusta tener mi propio escenario, y tener mi propio equipo esta muy muy guay, pero tambien me gustan los clubs porque el publico esta muy cerca de ti y esta muy bien

FANS
Bill: Esta muy bien porque no esperabamos tanta gente, es nuestra segunda actuacion aqui, sabes es nuestro comienzo en Los Estados Unidos, hemos viajado para decir hola a la gente y pensamos, Ok, habra 2 o 3 fans, y nunca esperabamos tanta gente esperandonos en frente del auditorio, es genial estar aqui. Creo que todas las fans de Tokio Hotel son las mejores fans en el mundo porque son muy energicas y estan siempre ahi vayamos donde vayamos... ( QUE DIVINOSSSS!!!)
Tom: Tambien desde el principio os apoyan en cada pais, es genial llegar a un nuevo pais y ya encontrarte fans en el aeropuerto, la otra vez tocamos un par de shows y ya cantaban incluso las letras en aleman y eso es muy agradable y esta genial.

INFLUENCIAS MUSICALES
Bill: Creo que no hay ua banda en concreto porque todos tenemos distintos gustos musicales y desde el principio creamos las canciones y ya era Tokio Hotel, nos salio asi desde el principio y todos estabamos deacuerdo..
Tom: No ha habido una banda que digamos queremos sonar como esto, porque Georg escucha a David Hasselhof, Gustav otro estilo, a Bill le gusta Nena, yo oigo hip hop aleman, todo muy distinto, pero en la sala de ensayos empezamos a crear musica y ya sale de nosotros Tokio Hotel

FORMANDO TOKIO HOTEL
Bill: Al principio eramos solo Tom y yo, teniamos 7 años y yo empece a escribir canciones, empezamos a hacer music, por supuesto en aleman porque yo no hablo ingles, mi ingles es muy muy malo, y mi primer contacto con la musica fue Nena, vi un concierto suyo en directo en la tel y me dije, yo quiero hacer eso quiero estar sobre un escenario y cantar, y luego Tom y yo empezamos a tocar en pequeños clubs, en bodas y demas y en un club nos viero Georg y Gustav y dijeron, esta es la banda...
Georg: alguien tiene que ayudarlos
Bill: Buscabamos un bajista y un bateria porque yo solo tenia un teclado...
Geor: Pero eras realmente bueno al teclado...
Bill: Yo no toco ningun instrumento, soy muy vago para aprender un instrumento, asi que fuimos juntos con Georg y Gustav a la sala de ensayos hace ya 8 años
Todos: Si hace 8 años.
Bill: Al principio eran como 5 o 7 personas en el club y todos muy mayores...
Tom: y tocabamos y tocabamos...
Bill: en nuestra ciudad en Madgeburg
Georg; y siempre era el mismo club por que no habia otro club
Tom: y mas tarde conocimos a un productor que nos dijo Ok, vamos a mi estudio y grabamos juntos y...
Bill: Nuestro primer single fue cuando teniamos 15, el 25 de Agosto nuestro single salio, y ahi empezo todo

EN EL PROCESO CREATIVO
Bill: A veces tengo letras y voy a Tom y se las canto con un melodia o le enseño mis letras y el toca la guitarra otras veces es Tom que tiene un acorde de guitarra y me lo muestra, siempre es diferente.
Tom: y nos renimos con nuestros 4 productores y exponemos lo que tenemos, los momentos en el estudio estan genial y son relajantes
Bill: Creo que es emocionante pensar tu musica a la audiencia, mejor que cuando la creas enel estudio

LA BARRERA DEL LENGUAGE
Bill: si fue un reto para mi porque siempr canto en aleman y mi ingles como veis no es muy bueno y soy un prefeccionista y queria sonar como un hablante nativo, y fuimos al estudio y tradujimos las canciones una a auna porque para nosotros las letras son importantes, llevo su tiempo que sonara natural

Bill: Gracias, es nuestro primer disco en ingles peroqueremos hacer mas
Tom: en el futuro sera asi, escribiremos las canciones en aleman y las traduciremos a ingles

SCREAM
Bil: Scream es una de nuestras primeras canciones y va de que grites por lo que quieres, que grites por tus derechos, en tu vida cuando tengas momntos en el colegio, en el trabajo, a veces quieres gritar y la cancion va de eso, de que grites

READY SET GO
Bill: es un poco nuestra historia, porque nosotros empezamos un nueva vida de u dia para otro, estabamos en el colegio y eramos adolescentes normales, y nuestro single salio y todo cambio y d un dia para otro nos fuimos de gira y...
Tom: va de romper tus fronteras...
Bill: si, romper tus fronteras y no tener miedo de empezar una nueva vida

MONSOON
Bill: Monsoon es una cancion de amor, fue nuestro primer singe en Alemania y es una cancion muy especial para nosotros porque fuenuestro primer gran exito en Europa y todo el mundo puede cantar la cancion en ingles y en aleman y es realmente la cancion de las fans, eligieron esta cancion y...
Tom: fue la idea de Georg, porqu me ama tanto que...
Georg: escribi la cancion para ti, si, por ti atravesaria el Monsoon si

ENCONTRAR LA FAMA A CORTA EDAD
Bill: yo creo que somos afortunados, nos encontro un productor y eso no asa ferciuentemente, vino a nosotros y nos dijo venid a mi estudio
Tom: y luego e disco y 3 tours europeos, y eso es grande para una banda alemana porque no suele haber la oportunidad de viajar a otros paises, tenemos muha suerte

PLANES PARA EL RESTO DEL 2008
Bil: creo que despues de America volvemos a Europay tocamos algunos conciertos y festivales y luego volvemos al estudio queremos escribir nuevas canciones y sacar nuevo disco, luego tocar mas conciertos y esa es nuestra vida, grabar canciones y tocar conciertos.
